TRUE Excels In Minding The Business Of NHL Goalies

Hockey goaltenders are an incredibly superstitious bunch.
To wit:
- Patrick Roy never skated on the red or blue lines.
- Marc-André Fleury loves to thank the goal posts when they make a stop for him.
They also care deeply about their equipment. For example, Ed Belfour never let anyone else touch his goalie gear. He would also disassemble his glove between periods if he felt it let him down during the game.
If NHL goalies care so much about their equipment and they are widely superstitious, suffice to say they can be considered experts when it comes to the best goalie equipment that money can buy.
According to GearGeek, the most popular goalie skate brand among NHL pro netminders is TRUE Hockey — and by a huge margin.
The breakdown (based on 2022-23 data): 75% of NHL goalies wear TRUE skates, 18% choose Bauer and 6% go with CCM. While all these equipment manufacturers make elite goalie skates, TRUE is clearly the most popular.
TRUE’s Cup Runneth Over
So, which NHL goalies wear the two models of TRUE skates?
Some of the league’s best currently use the TRUE Stock Two Piece skate, including Sergei Bobrovsky, a key contributor in the Florida Panthers reaching the 2023 Stanley Cup Final.
In fact, both starting and backup goalies in the last season’s Stanley Cup Final wore TRUE skates — Bobrovsky, Aidin Hill (TRUE TF9), Jonathan Quick and Alex Lyon.
The New York Rangers’ Igor Shesterkin, the best young Russian goalie in the NHL and 2022 Vezina Trophy winner, wears TRUE Stock Two Piece skates — as do Connor Hellebyuck, Jacob Markstrom, Linus Ullmark, Jordan Binnington, Jusse Saros and Thatcher Demko.
The TRUE train doesn’t stop there. Goalies who wear TRUE TF9 model skates include Phillip Grubbauer (Seattle), two-time Stanley Cup winner Quick (Vegas), Stanley Cup winner Darcy Kuemper (Washington), Jake Oettinger (Dallas) and Ilya Sorokin (New York Islanders).
Longtime Montreal Canadiens goalie Carey Price, a future Hall of Famer who retired after the 2021-22 season, used the TRUE Stock Two Piece Skate. While he likely has played his last NHL game, his resume speaks for itself: CHL Goaltender of the Year, AHL Calder Cup Champion and Playoff MVP, Vezina Trophy, Jennings Trophy, Hart Trophy, Ted Lindsay Award and Bill Masterton Trophy — along with World Juniors, World Cup and Olympic gold medals.
It’s clear that the NHL’s best goalies trust TRUE Hockey with their skates to support their success.
