NHL Draft Diaries: Equipment Edition - Matthew Schaefer

Matthew Schaefer is quickly solidifying his status as one of the top prospects for the 2025 NHL Draft. Hailing from Hamilton, Ontario, Schaefer just turned 17 and is already regarded as a player with franchise defenseman potential. Many NHL scouts and draft analysts project him as a top-five pick next summer, a testament to his remarkable talent and rapid development.

Currently in his second season with the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), Schaefer has been a standout performer. In just 14 games so far, he has recorded six goals and 18 points — outstanding numbers for a defenseman, especially one who is still considered on the younger side of the league’s talent pool. His ability to contribute offensively while maintaining a reliable presence in his own zone underscores his reputation as a two-way player with a high ceiling. Scouts praise his hockey IQ, skating ability, and poise under pressure, likening him to the type of player who can anchor an NHL blue line for years.

From an equipment standpoint, Schaefer’s affiliation with Bauer is a notable aspect of his budding career. He is currently skating with Bauer's popular Vapor HyperLite 2 skates, a choice that speaks to his need for agility and speed, traits that define his game. Recently, he was spotted at the CHL USA Prospects Challenge with Bauer’s new gold Proto R stick, showcasing one of the brand’s latest innovations. 

 

Earlier in the season, he was seen with Bauer's Nexus Tracer stick, highlighting his role in promoting and testing new products for the company. This strategic partnership with Bauer positions him as one of the brand’s marquee prospects, signaling mutual confidence in his trajectory toward NHL stardom.

 

As is the case with all players in the CHL, Schaefer adheres to the league's partnership with CCM, donning their gloves, helmet, and pants. However, Bauer’s history of retaining top prospects as loyal users when they transition to the NHL makes it likely Schaefer will continue to represent the brand at the professional level. While no commitments are guaranteed until his NHL debut, the relationship between Schaefer and Bauer seems strong and mutually beneficial.
