Ivan Demidov is rapidly becoming one of the most talked-about names in hockey circles as the 2024 NHL Draft approaches. A native of Sergiyev Posad, Russia, a city just northeast of Moscow, Demidov has made a significant impact in the Russian junior league, the MHL, playing for SKA St. Petersburg. His impressive statistics this past season-23 goals and 37 assists, totaling 60 points in just 30 games-highlight his exceptional talent and offensive prowess. As the June 28-29 draft nears, many scouts and analysts project him to be selected second overall, right after the highly touted Macklin Celebrini.
The Chicago Blackhawks currently hold the No. 2 pick, and there's growing speculation that they might seize the opportunity to select Demidov. Given his superstar potential, Demidov could significantly enhance any NHL team’s top-six forward group. His remarkable ability to score and create plays sets him apart as a premier prospect in this year’s draft.
Despite the excitement surrounding Demidov, the "Russian factor" remains a consideration for NHL teams. This term refers to the uncertainty of when Russian prospects will make the move to North America, even after being drafted. However, many would argue that Demidov's potential makes him a valuable asset who’d be worth the wait. His talent and skill set promise to transform any team's offensive capabilities once he arrives in the NHL.
One of the intriguing aspects of Demidov's rise as a top prospect is his choice of equipment. Early indications reveal that he has a preference for CCM gear, at least with sticks and gloves. Throughout the past season, he was using a Ribcor Trigger 8 Pro stick and JetSpeed FT4 Pro gloves. Funny to see him with the FT4 Pro gloves, as they are not currently worn by any player in the NHL. At the same time, though, they do make their fair share of appearances in junior leagues. His helmet choice was the Bauer Re-Akt 150, known for its advanced protection and comfort. Contrary to FT4 Pro gloves, it is worn by many players across the NHL.
Perhaps the most surprising detail about Demidov’s equipment is his choice of skates. He has been using the Bauer Vapor 2X Pro model skates, which are now a handful of years old. While many top prospects and professionals gravitate toward the latest models, Demidov's choice underscores a personal comfort and performance level with the older skates. This decision is not entirely unprecedented, as there are indeed some NHL players who have also favored older models that suit their style and needs best.
As draft day approaches, all eyes will be on which team secures Demidov and how soon he will transition to the NHL. His eventual arrival is highly anticipated, with the potential to shape the future of whichever team drafts him. Additionally, the suspense extends beyond the draft itself to the realm of endorsement deals. Top equipment manufacturers will undoubtedly vie for the opportunity to sign this promising talent, adding another layer of excitement to his burgeoning career.
Ivan Demidov stands on the cusp of what promises to be an extraordinary NHL career. His talent and commitment to success reflect a mix of tradition and innovation. This paints the picture of a player ready to make a significant impact. Fans and teams alike are eagerly waiting to see which franchise will benefit from his remarkable abilities and how his journey will unfold in the world’s premier hockey league.
