The hockey world was abuzz when the Anaheim Ducks selected Beckett Sennecke, a forward from the Oshawa Generals, as the third overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft. Sennecke, who hails from Toronto, Ontario, reacted with genuine shock to hearing his name called, a moment captured by television cameras and which quickly went viral. This surprise was shared by many experts who did not foresee Sennecke being chosen so high, yet it marks the beginning of what promises to be an exciting journey for the young prospect.
Sennecke's offensive performance with the Oshawa Generals was impressive, but not necessarily overwhelming compared to other top prospects. He tallied solid numbers, demonstrating his playmaking abilities and his knack for being a responsible forward in his own zone. Known for his sharp ability to steal the puck from opponents, Sennecke’s defensive acumen is as notable as his offensive skills. Despite not having the most eye-popping statistics, his well-rounded game and high hockey IQ have positioned him as a prospect with significant upside.
Sennecke's selection at third overall speaks volumes about the Ducks' faith in his potential. His skill set aligns well with the modern NHL forward—versatile, defensively responsible, and capable of contributing offensively. The Ducks' decision to pick him over other highly touted prospects suggests they see something special in Sennecke, a potential cornerstone for their franchise.
As most know, equipment choices can be as much a part of a player's identity as their playing style. For Sennecke, his gear choices reflect a blend of tradition and personal preference. As do all players in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), he wears CCM gloves, helmets, and pants. These items are standard across the league, due to the company’s partnership with the league.
However, when it comes to sticks and skates, players have more freedom to choose what suits them best. Sennecke opts for True skates, specifically the SVH Custom model, known for their comfort and custom fit. His stick choice is particularly interesting: he used the CCM Ribcor Trigger 7 Pro for the better part of this past season. This is notable because it is not the latest model; the Trigger 8 Pro was the current iteration in the Ribcor line this past season. But Sennecke did not make the change until later on. This decision hints at a possible superstition or simply a preference for the feel and performance of the older model. Additionally, it’s also very possible that he simply does not overthink his stick choices, and perhaps elected to finish his old stock, before upgrading to the new stuff.
As Sennecke prepares for his first NHL training camp with the Ducks, expectations are tempered with patience. It is unlikely that he will make the NHL roster right out of camp. Instead, he will probably return to the Oshawa Generals for another season, possibly even two, to continue his development.
Anaheim Ducks fans have much to look forward to though, with Sennecke. His selection might have been a surprise, but his potential is undeniable. As he continues to grow and develop, both in terms of his game and his understanding of the sport, Sennecke has the makings of an exciting player to watch. Whether it’s his playmaking abilities, his defensive prowess, or even his intriguing equipment choices, Beckett Sennecke is a name hockey enthusiasts should keep an eye on.
